This Laurel, MD home was ready for more space. As the family grew, the existing kitchen and surrounding living areas began to feel tight, closed off, and difficult to use for everyday life. Cooking felt cramped, storage was limited, and entertaining guests meant navigating a layout that simply didn’t flow. The home had strong character, but it no longer supported how the family wanted to live.
To solve the problem, we designed and built a rear home addition in Laurel, MD that expanded the footprint of the house and completely reimagined the interior layout. The new space allowed us to open the kitchen, dining, and living areas into one connected, open-concept design centered around a large entertainment island. What was once segmented and restrictive is now open, bright, and welcoming.
Expanding the rear of the home required new foundation work, structural framing, and careful integration with the existing structure. Every transition — from rooflines to interior finishes — was planned to ensure the addition felt original to the home rather than like an afterthought. Engineering, permitting, and inspections were carefully managed to meet Maryland building codes and ensure long-term structural integrity. Inside, the oversized island became the focal point of the new kitchen, designed intentionally as a gathering space for cooking, conversation, and everyday family life. To extend the home’s entertaining potential even further, we constructed a composite deck with low-maintenance vinyl railings off the rear of the addition. This outdoor upgrade creates a smooth indoor-outdoor connection and adds usable square footage for hosting, relaxing, and enjoying the seasons in Laurel.
Today, the home feels completely transformed. What was once cramped and disconnected is now open, connected, and built for real life.
